Helping Kids With Emergency Dentistry

What happens when your child comes to you with a chipped or knocked out tooth, or one that hurts? We could offer relief and prevent complications with emergency dental care! In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about how we help kids with emergency dentistry.

Common Dental Emergencies

When a tooth is chipped, this needs to be addressed quickly, as even minor damage could increase the risk of tooth decay and infections. Likewise, if your little one complains about sudden and persistent pain in a tooth, this could require treatment to prevent premature tooth loss. If an injury occurs and no damage is visible, consider an appointment as structures could be invisible to the naked eye and still cause harmful complications.

If a tooth is knocked out, then your little one needs to see us, the same goes for a tooth that is knocked loose, but still in place. Our team also wants to see your little one if a filling or crown is loose or missing, or if any orthodontics are impacted.

Seeing Our Team For Treatment

If you reach out to our team on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, we can usually make a same-day appointment to see your child for treatment. If you reach us when we are not open, then leave a message on our answering machine and a team member will reach out soon to discuss possible appointment times. We want to see your child as soon as possible for dental emergency care, so you avoid worsening pain and the risk of further complications.

Easing That initial Discomfort

Our team also has a few tips for easing your child’s discomfort until we can see them for treatment. For example, you can have them rinse with warm water and then use cloth or gauze to stem bleeding. You can offer them a cold compress for the side of the face to stop swelling. Kids can take an age-appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever as needed too. If a tooth is knocked out, place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. It can also be placed into the socket and your child can bite down gently to hold in place if we are seeing you immediately. If something is caught between the teeth or under the gums, only use floss to try and dislodge it, as anything else could damage the smile!
