We Provide Dental Sedation For Kids

Do your kids have anxiety or worry about discomfort? We understand, and we always take time to help ensure kids of all ages enjoy a positive experience in our office. To provide treatment that is comfortable, we offer dental sedation. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about dental sedation for kids.
Selecting the Right Option for Your Child
We have three different sedation options to choose from, so how do we select the right one for your child? We will first look at common factors, such as your child’s weight, age, and their medical history. We also consider the medications they are currently taking, and also assess their anxiety levels or the presence of special needs that could complicate the ability to undergo treatment. With this information, we can choose the best way to ensure they enjoy a calm and relaxing visit.
Our Experience and Expertise
Did you know that our team includes trained anesthesiologists who are board-certified and also members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates? Anytime that we have a procedure that will involve the use of dental sedation, we will have them on hand to help your child, ensuring their health, safety, and comfort throughout the process. They will also offer detailed aftercare instructions for parents.
Three Calming Options for Kids
The most common (and mild) selection we provide for kids is nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas. This is given in gas form through a mask over the nose. Your little one breathes the gas in and enters a euphoric state with little memory of the procedure, but they remain conscious throughout. The effects wear off once the procedure does, they may even be able to return to school.
If they require a deeper state of calm, this can be achieved through oral conscious sedation, which is given in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure, and offers a deep state of calm, likely with no memory of the process. The effects take time to wear off, so your child may be a bit groggy.
If they are undergoing a more extensive treatment or have serious anxiety, we could offer IV sedation, the deepest one available. They enter an almost sleep-like state, and will be monitored carefully throughout. Again, the effects take time to wear off fully.
