How We Help Kids With Restorative Dentistry

dallas kids restorations

Restorative dentistry involves the use of treatments like filling placement and even pulpotomies to address serious concerns, such as a cavity or even an infected tooth. With placement, we can help restore teeth and keep smiles from losing them prematurely. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about helping kids with our dental restorations.

When Children Require Restoration

When do children need to see our team for restorative dentistry? We may recommend a restoration when a tooth is damaged, even if the crack or chip appears minor, treatment is needed to avoid the sonnet of cavities or infection. Speaking of, we can also place restorations to treat cavities and even take on infection to stop discomfort and prevent the premature loss of a tooth, which limits the risk of misalignment. Our team could also use them to help improve the overall balance of the bite and to improve chewing function too.

Dental Fillings

If we find your child has a cavity, then we could help with restorative dentistry, and in only one visit! With a dental filling, we can treat cavities to prevent infection. Our team will use a composite resin option, which not only looks more lifelike, but is biocompatible and bonds with the tooth, making it safer than metal for smiles of all ages. Placement only takes one visit. The same material could be used in a bonding procedure to address minor damage to a tooth, such as a chip.

Our Crowns

If we find your child has damage or decay too severe for a filling or bonding procedure, then with restorative dentistry we could help by securing a dental crown. Also known as a full restoration, this will cap the tooth and cover the entire visible portion of it. For the side and rear teeth, which tend to experience greater bite forces, we could use a stainless-steel dental crown. For the more front facing teeth, we have an option that looks more natural, a NuSmile zirconia dental crown.

The Pulpotomy

When a tooth is infected in a grown-up’s smile, the dentist will conduct a root canal to treat it and keep the smile intact. For kids, we offer an alternative to the root canal, a more conservative option known as a pulpotomy. With this option, we will numb the tooth and gently open it to remove the infected portions of the inner issues. We then add medications and a filling material. For some, this completes the pulpotomy, but others may need us to cap the tooth with a dental crown.

Anesthesia and Sedation

We know kids may feel nervous about receiving treatment, especially if it is a more involved option like a pulpotomy. but we can take steps to ensure your little one is comfortable and relaxed. We can offer a local anesthetic to help numb the area where treatment is happening directly. We can also offer sedation to help kids enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the process in some cases. We can help choose from nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or even IV sedation, selecting the right version to ensure even kids with serious anxiety or special needs enjoys a positive experience in the office, and can receive the restorative treatment necessary to improve the health and function of the smile.

Preventing Cavities

In addition to restorative dentistry to treat issues like tooth decay, we could offer treatments to help lower the risk of cavities. For example, our team can offer fluoride as part of the exam and cleaning process, which helps strengthen the outer enamel to make the onset of cavities less likely, and this takes only seconds to apply. We could also offer dental sealants, a thin acrylic layer we put over the hard-to-reach rear teeth, which lowers the risk of cavities forming in the molars. The sealants can even stay in place for years to come, as long as ten in some cases.
