Celebrate MLK’s Birthday in Dallas, Texas

Are you hoping to find a fun, family-friendly way to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year? If so, there are lots of opportunities to do just that throughout Dallas and the metroplex. One of the biggest and best options is the 35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration, which will include a variety of events held throughout the weekend and on Monday, January 16, 2017. These events are being hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Board and Staff. This year the group has chosen the theme, “Breaking the Chains of Injustice.”

The Many Ways to Enjoy This Celebration

On Friday, January 13, 2017 there will be a Celebration Fair, with Keynote Speaker Dr. Walter Kimbrough from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. This will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a Candle Lighting Ceremony, at 7 p.m. Both events are free to the public, and will take place at the MLK Recreation Center, which is located at 2901 Pensylvania Ave. Dallas, TX 75215.

There will also be an Awards Gala and an Afterglow Event. The gala kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the Fairmont Hotel on 1717 N. Akard Street, Dallas, TX 75201. The cost for this event is $85 per person, including admission to the after event.

Then on Monday there will be a free parade, which begins at 10 a.m. on Holmes Street and MLK Boulevard in Dallas. The parade will then wind its way to Fair Park, and last about two hours. This year’s Grand Marshal will be Dallas District Attorney, Faith Simmons Johnson.
