Common Concerns: Answering Pediatric Dentistry Questions

Sometimes the biggest questions you face regarding your child’s dental care are the simplest in nature. For instance, trying to decide when to begin providing your child with dental checkups can be quite confusing, particularly if this is your first baby. The good news is that all of our patients have parents dealing with the same types of concerns. We encourage you to contact us to ask your questions, so we can help you feel comfortable about your little one’s care. In the meantime, we invite you to take a look at the following common questions (and answers) we often receive from patients:

Questions and Answers About Dental Care

Question #1: When Should I Schedule A First Visit?

Answer: Keep a close watch on your child’s smile and another eye on the calendar. If your child’s first tooth makes an appearance before your child’s first birthday, this is your signal to schedule an appointment. Otherwise, schedule an initial checkup for your child around the time his or her first birthday takes place.

Question #2: How Often Should My Child See You?

Answer: We will discuss the frequency of your child’s visits during your son or daughter’s first dental checkup. However, after a first exam we typically suggest that your child re-visits us once every six months for preventive checkups and for cleanings, too. By offering consistent care, we can help your child establish healthy habits, while protecting developing teeth and gums.

Question #3: Does My Child Need Fluoride?

Answer: We offer fluoride on a case-by-case basis. This is a common pediatric treatment because fluoride can re-mineralize areas that are beginning to fall victim to tooth decay, while strengthening tooth tissue.
