Regular checkups and cleanings, along with consistent brushing and flossing, go a long way in helping prevent tooth decay. Sometimes, though, a child needs a boost to protect teeth, especially if a lot of sugar is eaten throughout the day. One way to provide this extra protection is with dental sealants.
What are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are safe, with no known side effects. They are clear, thin coatings applied as liquid gel to the back teeth. The reason they’re applied there is because those teeth, with their uneven surfaces and location, are often the hardest to clean well. This makes them a favorite place for bacteria to live, which may lead to tooth decay. The sealant can help prevent bacteria from making a home there.
How is the Treatment Done?
Before applying the sealant, we’ll examine your child’s teeth and clean and dry them. We’ll then apply the liquid gel to the teeth and use a light to help make the gel hard. Sealants should last from five to 10 years if they’re properly cared for. We recommend sealants for any child whose back teeth have appeared.
