There are many ways we can help restore your child’s damaged tooth. These include dental crowns, dental fillings, and root canal treatments. But sometimes the best way to help maintain your child’s long term oral health is to extract the damaged tooth.
How the Treatment Works
To help your child feel at ease, we may offer dental sedation options. The treatment begins by numbing the tooth and the area surrounding it. Once your child is relaxed and the tissue in the tooth area is numb, we gently loosen the tooth and remove it from the mouth. Afterward, we will offer post-treatment instructions. Your child will need to leave the treated area alone so that clots can form, which is part of the healing process. We recommend your child rest and eat soft foods while the mouth heals.
Why Remove a Tooth?
There are several reasons for tooth extractions. Examples include
- A baby tooth may not develop properly or may not naturally fall out.
- Severe decay or infection may be affecting adjacent teeth and surrounding tissue.
- A tooth may be removed for strategic, orthodontic treatment.
Our primary goal is to save the tooth instead of extracting it, when possible. We can help determine the best course of action with you for your child.
