Dental Care: Simple, Positive Affirmations To Help Kids Feel Good!

Rest assured, our Dallas, TX team understands that when you’ve spent a lot of time trying to explain to a young child (or a teenager!) about why dental hygiene is so important, it can really take a lot out of you. However, when you give yourself time to rest and recover from what can feel like a battle and you reflect on the fact that your children do brush and floss (even if all does not always go extremely smoothly), you feel much better. You think about the many times you don’t have to go into explain-mode or find yourself suddenly debating the benefits of toothpaste! It is during these lovelier moments when offering your children positive reinforcement for a job well done can provide some serious momentum. Kind words promote happy feelings that give your children the encouragement they love (and that will help them build solid habits over time). Consider some easy yet powerful statements to remember to use when the moment arises!

I’m So Proud Of You!

Let your kids know how happy you are with their dental hygiene and their dental care in general. An easy time to do this is when you’ve left our practice after a cleaning and checkup. Or, even if your child comes in for a dental filling. Reminding them that their participation in caring for their teeth is a source of pride will help them see that prevention, restorative care, and simply having a good attitude about oral health care is always important!

You’re Doing An Excellent Job!

When you brush or floss with your child and they do a wonderful job putting their best effort into the dental hygiene experience, don’t let it go unnoticed. We encourage you to tell your child that he or she is doing an excellent job. Remember, this doesn’t mean you can’t offer up a positive affirmation and offer some tips when necessary. For instance, “You’re doing an excellent job with your brushing and flossing! Just remember to rinse the sink once you’re through,” is an easy way to offer reminders, while extending some praise, too!
