Tongue Talk: A Few Helpful Tips

At this point, if you know all about brushing and flossing, then you’re most certainly on track with optimal dental hygiene with your kiddos. They’re probably starting to get the hang of the details and are well on their way toward developing excellent habits that will become a natural part of their daily lives (hopefully forever and ever). As your friendly dental practice, we like to check in from time to time to make sure you really do feel like you’re on top of things with your child’s oral health. Today, for instance, we offer tips on the tongue just in case you need a bit of additional guidance.

Tip: Don’t Forget About Tongue Cleaning!

It’s very important that in addition to learning to brush and floss, your child knows that tongue brushing is part of the process. This will promote your son or daughter’s best oral health because it removes a surprising amount of bacteria (and impossible to see food particles). The result? Excellent protection against bad breath, cavities, and more.

Tip: Burned Tongue? Follow Our Suggestions.

Did your child come to you upset because of a burned tongue? A sip of something (or a bite of something) that’s just a fraction too hot is never a fun experience. While your child’s oral health is likely perfectly fine, your little one needs some comfort. Have your child drink cold water (or have your child place his or her tongue under very cold water from the faucet) for an immediate fix. Then, skip hot and spicy foods for a while (and, if you can, have your child use saltwater for a couple days as a rinse).
