Root Canal Treatments: Why We Suggest Them

Like any parent, you are probably a bit hesitant to schedule a dental treatment for your child until you have all of your questions answered. When it comes to understanding why we suggest root canal treatments for your little one, we can certainly understand why you feel concerned. First, recognize that we prioritize your child’s comfort above all else. If a root canal is necessary, we will gently and thoroughly numb the tooth in question as well as surrounding tissues for a comfortable experience. Now, as for why we may suggest this restorative service for your child, we invite you to take a look at the following information:

Your Child’s Tooth Is At Risk

We suggest root canals when your child’s dental pulp becomes severely damaged or infected. This can result from a severe cavity. Or, it may occur when bacteria enters a healthy tooth, leading to the infection of the interior body. Within the body of the tooth and the root canals – or the lowermost hollow portions of your child’s tooth – lives dental pulp. The pulp lines this life center of the tooth, providing it with nutrients and oxygen. Unfortunately, the pulp cannot heal itself. Eventually, the tooth will die and it will require removal. This treatment can save the tooth from an extraction.

Surrounding Teeth Are At Risk

An infected tooth is not a problem that remains isolated for long. While the problem can worsen and result in a significantly uncomfortable abscess, the infection can also spread throughout your child’s mouth. This will result in a problem much more difficult to treat. Root canals protect the tooth in question as well as your little one’s entire smile.

Root Canal Treatment Saves Teeth

We suggest a root canal treatment – or a “pulpotomy” – for your child to save the problem tooth. Because the pulp cannot heal itself, we will remove the infected portion and then fill the remaining space with a medicated substance. We suggest treatment to clear up the infection, so the tooth may remain in place.
